Winston George was murdered in his own basement and his killer was acting on the instructions of his wife Darlene, Murder Calls examines this crime of passion and greed.
Darlene and Winston George met in New York City and married in 2002. However, by the time they moved to Maine in 2008, their marriage was on the rocks. Both of them were involved in affairs, but Darlene was jealous of her husbands lover and also wanted his property.
She hatched a plan with her lover, Rennie Cassimy, and her brother Jeffrey Williams to kill her husband.
On June 20, 2008, Darlene called 911 and reported a home invasion, telling police on their arrival that masked men had tied up her with her son and put them upstairs. She also said that when her husband returned from the work, the men killed him.
Police found Winston, 44, in the basement, he’d been strangled and a plastic bag put over his head. A bottle of rum had also been pushed into his mouth, through a small hole in the bag.
Detectives did not believe Darlene’s story and their investigation led them straight to Cassimy and her brother Jeffrey. Cassimy soon turned on his co-conspirators and testified against them.
In 2008 Darlene and Jeffrey were found guilty and she was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with her brother receiving a life sentence. There appeal in 2012 was rejected by Maine’s highest court and their convictions were upheld.
