ID is re-airing a The Murder Tapes investigation into the murder of Odie Carrier Jr, who was shot dead by Connor Johnson during a robbery of his home in Evansville, Indiana.
On November 8, 2018, Johnson hatched a plan with fellow teenagers Xzereus Dlamini and Mackayla Scarbrough to rob the 65-year-old Carrier.
According to the police, Carrier had contacted 17-year-old Scarbrough and arranged to pay her for sex. It is unknown if he knew the girl was underage.
Johnson and Dlamini went with Scarbrough, and after the teen girl had gone inside, the two men forced their way in the front door. Johnson fired a gun, striking Carrier.
The victim was later transported to a hospital but passed away a few days later.
The cops recovered text messages from Carrier’s phone showing he had requested sex from somebody, but they were as yet unable to identify who he had texted.

The following day, the killer trio were stopped in a routine traffic stop, and the police recovered drugs and weapons. Johnson and Dlamini were actually arrested on misdemeanor drug and weapons charges. However, at this stage, the police didn’t have anything to connect them to the shooting.
Watch the Latest on our YouTube ChannelDetectives had a breakthrough when they identified Scarbrough as owing the phone Carrier had texted. All three were arrested and initially charged with murder.
During an interview with detectives, Johnson made statements that incriminated himself. Johnson and Dlamini were placed in Vanderburgh County Jail, while Scarbrough was placed in a juvenile facility. Scarbrough later faced charges as an adult.
Johnson was identified as the triggerman and faced the prospect of a lengthy sentence. However, he finally agreed to a deal, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

The killer was sentenced to 20 years, followed by another 20 years of probation. He is currently incarcerated at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, Indiana.
Dlamini and Scarbrough also decided to cut a deal. They had their murder charges dropped in exchange for pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit armed robbery. They were sentenced to four years each.
According to Indiana Dept. of Corrections records, Dlamini was released in 2023 but found himself back in prison in 2024 after he was sentenced on a number of charges, including possession of a weapon by a felon and resisting arrest.
Scarbrough has since been released.
