ID is re-airing the Fear Thy Neighbor investigation into the murder of Nikkolas “Nikko” Sienna by his neighbor Mark Duckett in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In July 2019, in the early hours of the morning, 26-year-old Duckett broke into the home of the Sienna family, his next-door neighbors. He shot dead 28-year-old Nikko with a handgun.
Duckett shot his victim a shocking 12 times, even pausing to reload before continuing to fire.
The killer fled the scene but later drove to a police station, where he turned himself in. The police attended the scene after receiving reports of shots fired.
A few hours before the murder, the Siennas had already called the police on Duckett because he was banging on their windows and shining a flashlight in through the windows. The cops gave him a verbal warning and left.
At the killing, Hamilton police Staff Sgt. Dave Oleniuk told reporters, “[Nikko] was a young guy. He’s never been in trouble whatsoever. He worked for a living, and he had a good life.”
Mark Duckett showed obsessive signs before killing Nikko Sienna
The investigators later learned that Duckett had schizophrenia and was suffering from hallucinations and delusions that made him incorrectly believe the Sienna family was out to get him.
Watch the Latest on our YouTube ChannelDuckett had become increasingly obsessed with Nikko and the rest of the family, even installing a surveillance camera that he pointed directly at their home.
The shooter had purchased the murder weapon legally despite showing signs of schizophrenia.
He was charged with first-degree murder; however, he pleaded not guilty on the basis of mental illness. A psychiatrist evaluated Duckett and concluded he didn’t know right from wrong.
The court found Duckett not criminally responsible for the murder or NCR. He will be confined to a psychiatric hospital and given annual reviews until further notice.
Nikko Sienna family argues that Mark Duckett escaped justice
The Sienna family vented their anger at what they saw as a betrayal of the justice system. Nikko’s mother, Cathy Sienna, argued in court that Duckett had premeditated the murder.
She said, “I do not believe in the NCR that he was schizophrenic in that moment because he waited until we were all sound asleep in bed and the lights went out, and he did it. After he drove himself to the police station and he turned himself in. He knew right from wrong.”
Nikko’s father, Louis Sienna, said the system had failed his son from “start to finish; it’s sad. My poor son pays the price.”
