A Plan to Kill is investigating the murder of postal worker Jason Schaefer, who was gunned down by his ex-girlfriend Devan Rebecca Schreiner as he worked his route in Longmont, Colorado.
Schaefer and Schreiner had a five-year-old son together, but sadly, when their relationship soured, the pair entered into a bitter custody battle over the child. Schreiner was accused of refusing to allow Schaefer to co-parent the boy.
In October 2021, Schreiner planned with her then-current boyfriend, Andrew Ritchie, to kill 33-year-old Schaefer. On October 13, 2021, Ritchie, an employee at the Federal Correctional Institution in Littleton, followed Schaefer as he conducted his postal route.
Ritchie remained in telephone contact with Schreiner throughout the morning and informed her of Schaefer’s whereabouts. In the early afternoon, Schreiner approached her ex-boyfriend at a row of community mailboxes and shot him three times.
The killer was recorded fleeing the scene on surveillance cameras. The footage later helped to identify Schreiner as items resembling those belonging to the shooter were later recovered from her car.
Schreiner was also a postal worker with the USPS in Loveland, CO, about 25 miles from Longmont. She was supposedly working on the morning of the murder, but her supervisor noted that a GPS device indicated her van had remained motionless for several hours around the time of the murder.
Devan Schreiner arrested same day as Jason Schaefer murder
Schreiner was arrested the evening of the murder and was formally charged with first-degree murder a few days later.

Both Schreiner and Ritchie were found guilty of first-degree murder by a jury in separate trials, and both were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Colorado operates a mandatory life sentence for first-degree murder.
Schreiner is currently incarcerated at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility in Denver, CO. Ritchie is being held at the Arkansas Valley Correctional in Ordway, CO.
Prosecution and Jason Schaefer family hailed convictions of Devan Schreiner and Andrew Ritchie
Following Schreiner’s sentencing, the prosecution read out a victim-impact statement on behalf of Schaefer’s mother, which read, “This has been a living nightmare. I have not slept since his murder. Our lives have been destroyed forever.”
At Ritchie’s sentencing, Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said, “These two robbed Jason’s family and U.S. Postal colleagues of a beloved son, father, and friend. Since the first hours after Jason’s murder, I have been deeply grateful for the strong partnership between the Longmont Police Department, U.S. Postal Inspectors, and our team.”
