Til Death Do Us Part is examining the murder of Heather DeWild, nee Springer, who was killed by her estranged husband, Daniel DeWild, and his identical twin brother, David DeWild.
On July 24, 2003, Daniel lured his soon-to-be ex-wife, 30-year-old Heather, to the home he shared with his brother David in Edgewater, Colorado.
The couple were going through a divorce and were already living separately. Daniel persuaded Heather to come to the house to discuss or collect documents regarding their children’s insurance. Heather brought along their two kids, aged 5 and 3.
When Heather arrived, she was brought into the garage where Daniel and David had prepped the room for murder. The brothers had already laid out duct tape and rope and had built a pulley system for hanging Heather.
As Heather walked into the room, she was hit in the back of the head and then strangled using the pulley.
The police were suspicious of Daniel from the beginning of the investigation. Two days before Heather vanished, Daniel had turned up at her parents’ home with flowers and a card in an apparent attempt to win her back. However, after she turned him down, he allegedly left in a rage.
Cops struggled for evidence Daniel DeWild killed Heather Springer
A police dog identified decomposing material in the back of Daniel’s car, something he couldn’t explain.
Watch the Latest on our YouTube ChannelThe cops recovered Heather’s car, and after noting a complete absence of any DNA, they concluded the vehicle had been thoroughly scrubbed.
Six weeks later, a Colorado Department of Transportation worker found Heather’s decomposing remains in a shallow grave just off Highway 6 near Golden, CO. Her remains were wrapped in garbage bags, and her neck and wrists were tied with rope.
Heather was wearing the same clothes as when she went to meet Daniel.
Unfortunately, the case went cold in 2004 due to insufficient evidence. Pressure from Heather’s family, especially her father, Dave Springer, a former Denver PD cop, led to a fresh examination of the case two years later.
The cops found that cell phone data combined with witness statements put brother-in-law David and his car in the vicinity of where Heather’s car was abandoned.
The police also noted that the rope tied around Heather’s wrists was tied in a particularly distinctive fashion that Daniel was known to use. Finally, Daniel’s son told detectives that he had seen his dad attacking his mom; the now older son said he didn’t know why his parents were fighting and hadn’t seen his mom again.
David and Daniel DeWild finally convicted for Heather Springer murder
It took until 2011 for David and Daniel DeWild to be arrested. David then turned on his brother, describing in exact detail how Heather was killed.
Eventually, Daniel pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 74 years. His brother, Daniel, was convicted of for conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and was sentenced to 12 years.
