Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death is examining the crimes of Chad Alan Lee, who, with his accomplice, teenager David Scott Hunt, murdered and robbed Harold “Harry” Drury, Linda Reynolds, and David Lacey during a 3-week crime spree in Phoenix, Arizona.
On April 27, 1992, Lee entered a convenience store and purchased some cigarettes. As store clerk Harold Drury opened the cash drawer, Lee shot him in the shoulder.
Lee then shot Drury six more times before helping himself to the cash drawer. He then fled the scene with his accomplice, 14-year-old Scott Hunt, who was waiting outside in Lee’s car.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the beginning of Lee and Hunt’s crime spree. On April 6, the pair kidnapped Linda Reynolds, a Pizza Hut delivery person, from a vacant house.
They forced Reynolds to remove her clothing and then drove her out to the desert, where they raped her. They then took her to an ATM, where they forced her to withdraw $20. Finally, Lee shot her in the head, and after realizing she was still alive, he stabbed her twice in the chest.
On April 15, 1992, Lee and Hunt robbed and murdered taxi driver David Lacey. The taxi driver had fought back, attempting to grab the gun, causing Lee to fire nine shots; four of the bullets hit Lacey. The murderous pair dumped the body before abandoning the cab at a different location.
The killers took $40 from Lacey, but crucially, Lee left behind his cigarette lighter and a bloody receipt with his fingerprints.

The police concluded that the same people were responsible for killing Lacey and Reynolds. The cops learned that Lee had ordered a Hawaiian pizza with pepperoni to lure Reynolds to the vacant home. They discovered this distinctive pizza had been ordered before and traced the previous order to an address where both killers were staying. It was Hunt’s parent’s address.
Lee and Hunt both admitted to the murders during police interviews.
Chad Alan Lee was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder. He was also convicted of 13 other offenses, including robbery, rape, and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to death.
Lee is currently incarcerated on death row at the Eyman Arizona State Prison in Florence, AZ.
David Hunt escaped death penalty for his role in Drury, Reynolds, and Lacey murders
David Scott Hunt escaped the death penalty because he was only 14 at the time of the crimes; the US Supreme Court states offenders must be 16 before they are eligible for the death penalty.
Hunt was given two life sentences for the murders of Lacey and Reynolds. In 2009, he was given a third life sentence after he participated in the murder of another inmate.
