1:30 a.m. on July 14, 1991, in Colorado Springs, and Warren stumbled into the Baja Lounge tavern on East Fountain Boulevard, he was badly bleeding from a neck wound. The 29-year-old had been shot in the parking lot outside the bar and when police arrived they found him lying on the floor. He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead soon after he was admitted.
Just a month before, Earl Cotton, 30, had been gunned down in the same spot. The parking lot area was reportedly a popular hangout for large groups of youths and local businesses had been complaining in the press that it was a magnet for trouble.
Detectives soon discovered that Warren also went by the name Douglas Richardson and were at first unable to work out which was his legal name. The initial police investigation pointed to a drug deal going wrong but Kenda had to carry out a nerve wracking sting operation to try and snag the killer.
